Baía das Agulhas, which translates to "Bay of Needles," is one of the most spectacular coastal stretches on Príncipe island. It owes its name to the dramatic volcanic rock needles and steep towers that rise majestically from the dense rainforest. These geological formations are phonolitic intrusions exposed by millions of years of erosion and are today the symbol of the Obo National Park on Príncipe. The bay itself is only accessible by sea or via challenging hiking trails, which has preserved its pristine and wild beauty. Getting there
Usually accessed by boat tours departing from the main town of Santo António or major resorts on Príncipe. Reaching this remote coastline by land is practically impossible due to the dense, untamed jungle terrain.
Best season
The dry season, roughly from June to September, provides calmer seas and clearer skies for viewing the bay. Heavy rains and rougher waters during the wet season can make boat trips uncomfortable or even dangerous.

The area is defined by dramatic, towering volcanic 'needles' rising vertically from the pristine ocean waters. Visitors experience the bay entirely from the rocking deck of a boat, observing the steep, forested cliffs.
What to bring
Essential items include motion sickness medication if prone to seasickness, a good windbreaker, and secure sunglasses. A waterproof bag for cameras and phones is highly recommended to protect against constant sea spray.
Parking
Vehicles are left securely at the local marina or hotel parking areas where the boat tours originate. The entire excursion to the bay relies completely on marine transport, making car access irrelevant past the port.
