Príncipe Rainforest (São Tomé & Príncipe)

Weather…

The Príncipe rainforest, which covers most of the southern interior of the island, is a jewel of biodiversity. It is part of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Príncipe Island and is considered one of the most important hotspots for endemism worldwide. The forest is a mosaic of primary lowland and mountain rainforest, largely undisturbed for millions of years. Characteristic are the gigantic trees, covered by a dense network of lianas and epiphytes. This forest is home to an exceptional number of species found only here, including seven bird species, one owl species, three lizard species, and one frog species. Exploring this forest is a constant challenge and repeatedly leads to the discovery of new species. It is the living heart of Príncipe and crucial for its ecological balance.
