Rusumo Bridge (Rwanda)

Weather…

The Rusumo Bridge, spanning the Kagera River, is the most important border crossing between Rwanda and Tanzania. It has a profoundly ambivalent history. During the 1994 genocide, it was a major escape route for hundreds of thousands of Rwandans fleeing into Tanzania. The images of overcrowded streams of refugees crossing the bridge became a symbol of the humanitarian crisis. After the genocide, it was the path through which many refugees returned home. Today, a new, modern bridge stands alongside the old one. The crossing has been upgraded to a One-Stop Border Post to speed up trade and movement of people between the two countries. The nearby Rusumo Falls are also an attraction. The bridge remains a powerful symbol of flight, return, and the economic integration of East Africa.
