Rusumo is a town in the Eastern Province of Rwanda, right on the border with Tanzania. The town is known for the Rusumo Falls, a series of waterfalls on the Akagera River, and the border crossing to Tanzania. This border crossing is the most important for trade along the central corridor, which connects Rwanda to the Tanzanian port of Dar es Salaam. A large regional hydroelectric power project has been implemented in Rusumo, jointly operated by Rwanda, Tanzania, and Burundi, which has significantly improved the electricity supply in the region. Rusumo town itself is small, and its economy is heavily dependent on border traffic and trade. The bridge over the Akagera River is a symbol of connection and economic cooperation in the region.
