The Tula Kremlin is a 16th-century architectural jewel and the undisputed historical center of the city of Tula. It was built between 1507 and 1520 by order of Grand Prince Vasily III of Moscow to secure the strategically important southern border of the Russian state against constant raids by Crimean Tatars. The striking structure consists of massive red brick walls resting on a solid white limestone foundation and is flanked by nine imposing, architecturally unique defensive towers. Unlike many other Russian fortresses that were built on hills, the Tula Kremlin is situated in a river floodplain, with the surrounding swampland serving as a natural barrier. Throughout its long and martial history, the fortress was never conquered. Inside, the kremlin today houses the magnificent Uspensky Cathedral and cutting-edge interactive museums dedicated to Tula's rich history of craftsmanship and military prowess.
