Weather…

The archaeological ruins of Tanais, located in the delta of the Don River near the Sea of Azov, offer a fascinating glimpse into the northernmost expansion of ancient Greek civilization. Founded in the early 3rd century BC by settlers from the Bosporan Kingdom, Tanais quickly developed into a bustling hub where nomadic steppe peoples such as the Sarmatians and Scythians met Hellenistic merchants. For centuries, the city flourished through the trade of grain, salted fish, and slaves, which were exchanged for Greek wines and olive oil. The excavations, which began in the mid-19th century, unearthed impressive remains of massive defensive walls, stone houses, cobbled streets, and huge amphorae used for wine storage. After being destroyed by the Goths in the 3rd century AD, the settlement briefly recovered before being permanently abandoned in the 5th century.
