Vladikavkaz
Vladikavkaz, which literally means 'Ruler of the Caucasus,' is an elegant city at the foot of the mountains that has preserved its historic charm from the Tsarist era. Along Prospekt Mira, the central pedestrian boulevard, visitors can admire beautiful Art Nouveau buildings and classicist facades. A highlight of the city is the Sunni Mukhtarov Mosque on the banks of the Terek River, remarkable with its intricate ornaments and the scenic backdrop of the snow-capped Mount Kazbek. The city serves as the cultural heart of the region, boasting numerous theaters and museums dedicated to Ossetian history and the poet Kosta Khetagurov. A walk through Gorsky Park has lush green relaxation, while the historic tram rattles gently through the avenues. Culturally and gastronomically, Vladikavkaz is a must: the famous Ossetian pies (pirogi) are found here in their most authentic form, often served with local beer or wine. As a major hub, the city is strategically located on the Georgian Military Highway, making it the excellent starting point for excursions into high mountain valleys or across the border to Georgia. The best time to visit is from May to October, when the mild climate allows for long city walks. Vladikavkaz provides a relaxed atmosphere where Caucasian hospitality blends seamlessly with the flair of an old European provincial town.
