Sulak Canyon
Sulak Canyon is a true natural wonder in the Republic of Dagestan, reaching depths of up to 1,920 meters, making it deeper than the Grand Canyon in the USA. The Sulak River winds through massive limestone cliffs like a ribbon of liquid turquoise, creating an unforgettable visual feast. Most visitors head to the viewpoint near the settlement of Dubki to soak in the majestic aerial views, often spotting eagles soaring on the thermals above. For adventurers, a boat trip on the river at the bottom is a must, offering a completely different perspective of the towering walls. The area is dotted with trout farms serving freshly caught fish right by the water, a culinary highlight of the region. The blend of rugged alpine scenery and the massive Chirkey Reservoir with its colossal dam makes it a diverse destination. The nature here is raw yet beautiful, defined by arid slopes and lush valleys. Accessibility from Dagestan's capital, Makhachkala, is good, with the drive taking about two to three hours. The best time to visit is from April to October, with spring being particularly scenic as the hillsides turn spirited green. Sulak Canyon has become a tourism hotspot in recent years, but it still provides plenty of wild spots for intrepid travelers. It is a place that powerfully showcases the immense scale and artistry of nature.
