Karadakh Gorge
The Karadakh Gorge is a wide-open natural monument located in the heart of Dagestan. This narrow passage, approximately 400 meters long, was carved through limestone by the Kvartakh River over thousands of years. At its narrowest points, the gorge is only 2 to 4 meters wide, while its sheer rock walls soar up to 170 meters high, often blocking out the sunlight and creating a permanent twilight. Visitors are drawn here by the awe-inspiring silence and the sight of massive boulders wedged between the canyon walls. It is a prime destination for hikers and photographers seeking a dramatic landscape. Nearby attractions include the historic village of Gunib, which has remarkable views and a glimpse into the region's complex history. The trek through the gorge is relatively easy but requires sturdy footwear for the rocky riverbed. The best time to visit is from late spring to early autumn when the weather is dry and stable. Travelers can reach the gorge by car from Makhachkala. After exploring the canyon, one must try local Dagestani dishes like Khinkal or Kurze, which are staples of the highlanders' diet. Safety is paramount, as the gorge should be avoided during heavy rains due to the risk of flash floods.
