Naberezhnye Chelny, dynamically situated on the banks of the majestic Kama River in the Republic of Tatarstan, is synonymous worldwide with Russian engineering and heavy commercial vehicles. The city, which began in the 17th century as a modest agricultural settlement, underwent an unprecedented transformation in the 1970s when the gigantic KAMAZ truck plant was built here. This colossal industrial project turned the city into the „truck capital“ of the Soviet Union almost overnight and continues to shape its economic and social life to this day. The architectural face of Naberezhnye Chelny is dominated by the typical, sprawling residential neighborhoods (the so-called „complexes“) of the Soviet planned city era, which are enlivened by modern mosques and newly designed promenades on the Nizhnekamsk Reservoir.
