Izhevsk is the capital city of the Udmurt Republic in Russia and is internationally renowned as a primary center of the country's arms industry. Founded in 1760 on the Izh River, the city began as a settlement around an ironworks plant. Over the centuries, Izhevsk evolved into Russia's 'arsenal,' home to the Izhmash factory (now Kalashnikov Concern), where the world-famous AK-47 assault rifle was developed and mass-produced. Mikhail Kalashnikov lived and worked in the city for most of his life, and a dedicated museum honoring his engineering legacy is a major local attraction. Beyond military manufacturing, Izhevsk has a significant history in vehicle production, including Izsh motorcycles and automobiles. The city landscape is dominated by the Izhevsk Pond, one of Europe's largest artificial reservoirs, constructed in the 18th century to power the local mills.
