The Zaqatala State Nature Reserve is located on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus Mountains and is one of the oldest and most important protected areas in Azerbaijan. It was established in 1929 to protect the region's pristine mountain forests and rich wildlife. The reserve covers an area of over 47,000 hectares and is characterized by dense deciduous forests dominated by beech, oak, and hornbeam. It is an important habitat for many endangered species, including the East Caucasian tur, brown bear, lynx, and a variety of birds of prey. Its untouched nature, deep canyons, and clear mountain rivers make it a paradise for biodiversity. Tourist access is strictly regulated to preserve the delicate ecosystems.

Best season
The summer months from June to September are typically good, as the high mountain meadows are completely snow-free. Large mammals like brown bears find plenty of food during this mild phase.
Best time of day
Be sure to take advantage of the late evening twilight or the very early morning, when normally shy animals emerge. During daylight, lynxes mostly sleep deep in the highly inaccessible forests.
Etiquette
Under no circumstances should you leave the permitted paths, to fully respect the retreat areas of this protected wildlife. Leaving food scraps out in the open is forbidden, as it attracts brown bears.
What to bring
Sturdy, over-the-ankle footwear is the most vital prerequisite for safely navigating these steep and rocky Caucasus slopes. Also, remember to bring a good pair of binoculars to spot distant eagles.
Getting there
The area frequently requires special state visitor permits, which are best arranged smoothly through local tour operators. The drive from Zagatala is very bumpy, making an off-road vehicle highly necessary.
What to expect
The immense vastness of the mountains means that you will spend a lot of time safely scanning seemingly empty slopes. Do not be severely disappointed if you ultimately only discover fresh animal tracks.
