Zaqatala lies picturesquely at the foot of the Greater Caucasus at around five hundred metres altitude, surrounded by dense forests, rushing mountain streams and endless hazelnut plantations. The region is the largest hazelnut producer in Azerbaijan and one of the most important in the world; the harvest is mainly exported to Italy and other European countries. The town itself has about thirty thousand inhabitants, including numerous ethnic minorities such as Avars, Tsakhurs, Ingiloy Georgians and Lezgins, which is reflected in its rich culinary and musical traditions. Notable sights include the nineteenth-century Zaqatala Fortress, where Decembrists were once exiled, the central Chinar Park with century-old plane trees, the ethnographic museum, and the nearby Zaqatala Nature Reserve with its dense Caucasian beech and oak forests.
