Established in 1723 due to its proximity to copper deposits, the city evolved into a major industrial and administrative hub. Notably, the Permian geological period was named after this region in 1841 by British geologist Sir Roderick Murchison, who identified its unique rock strata here. Today, Perm is a key center for aircraft engine manufacturing, oil refining, and the timber industry.
