Perm is a significant city in eastern European Russia, located on the banks of the Kama River at the foothills of the Ural Mountains. Established in 1723 due to its proximity to copper deposits, the city evolved into a major industrial and administrative hub. Notably, the Permian geological period was named after this region in 1841 by British geologist Sir Roderick Murchison, who identified its unique rock strata here. Today, Perm is a key center for aircraft engine manufacturing, oil refining, and the timber industry. The city is also a major cultural destination, home to the prestigious Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre and the PERMM Museum of Contemporary Art. History is preserved at the nearby Perm-36 memorial, which stands as the only preserved Soviet-era GULAG labor camp museum. Stretching over 70 kilometers along the Kama River, Perm serves as a vital river port and a crucial stop on the Trans-Siberian Railway, connecting European Russia with the vast territories of Siberia and the Far East.
