Founded in 1152 by Yuri Dolgorukiy, it has occupied a vital place in the nation's historical narrative for centuries. Its supreme architectural treasure is the Ipatiev Monastery, widely regarded as the cradle of the Romanov dynasty, as it was here that Mikhail Romanov was acclaimed as Tsar in 1613. The city center is notable for its unique fan-shaped urban layout, decreed by Catherine the Great, with streets radiating from the central Susanin Square. Kostroma is also celebrated as the 'cheese capital' of Russia and the official home of Snegurochka (the Snow Maiden), the legendary granddaughter of Ded Moroz.
