Chemal
Chemal is the climatic heart of the Altai Mountains and a magnet for travelers seeking healing and spiritual tranquility. Thanks to its unique location in a mountain basin, it enjoys an exceptionally mild microclimate with plenty of sunshine and ozone-rich air. The most famous sight is Patmos Island, home to a small wooden church perched on a rock, accessible only via a narrow suspension bridge high above the Katun River. Another highlight is the historic Chemal hydroelectric station, which now serves as a museum. Nature around Chemal is characterized by majestic cliffs and the rushing turquoise waters of the Katun. Hikers love the 'Goat Path', which has spectacular views of the confluence of the Chemal and Katun rivers. The region is also a major hub for rafting tours, ranging from relaxing drifts to adventurous rapids suitable for all skill levels. In terms of food, Chemal provides traditional Altai dishes such as kocho soup and freshly baked pastries. Local cafes serve homemade cheeses and herbal teas brewed from plants gathered in the surrounding mountains, excellent for a relaxing afternoon break. Getting here typically takes about two hours by bus or car from Gorno-Altaysk. The best time to visit is summer for outdoor adventures, though late spring is also remarkable when the maral-root flowers paint the hillsides in animated shades of purple.
