Katon-Karagay is the heart of the Kazakh Altai mountains. This remote region in East Kazakhstan is famous for its panoramic alpine scenery, often referred to as the "Kazakh Switzerland." The village itself serves as the well-suited base for expeditions into the Katon-Karagay National Park, the country's largest. Visitors come here to experience pristine nature. Tours to the majestic Mount Belukha, the highest peak in the Altai, begin here. The region is also world-renowned for its maral (deer) farms, where the healing properties of deer antlers are utilized in traditional baths. Local honey is also considered among the finest in the world. The local culture is a blend of Kazakh traditions and the influence of Russian Old Believer settlers. Gastronomically, organic products, fresh milk, and wild game dominate. Outdoor activities like horseback riding, hiking, and photography are the main draws. The best time to visit is summer (June to August), when the high pastures are in full bloom. The journey is long, requiring a drive from Oskemen often over bumpy roads, but this only adds to the charm of its seclusion. A visit here is a retreat into pure nature.
