Piribebuy, a town in the Cordillera Department in central Paraguay, lies about 75 kilometres east of Asunción along the Piribebuy River in a hilly landscape at the foot of the Cordillera de los Altos. It was founded in 1640 as a Franciscan reduction and is one of the oldest towns in the country. Piribebuy gained historical fame through the Battle of Piribebuy on 12 August 1869, in which Paraguayan defenders, including women and children, fought desperately to halt the Brazilian troops; the massacre of the defenders is regarded as one of the most tragic episodes of the War of the Triple Alliance. At that time the town was the provisional capital of Paraguay. Today around 25 000 people live here, working mainly in agriculture, sugar-cane farming and tourism. Notable sights include the historic parish church, the Heroes' Museum and the nearby Salto Cristal, a beautiful waterfall in the mountains.
