💡 Tips
- Plan your visit for the morning when the local craft workshops and markets are most active.
- Bring plenty of cash in the local currency (Guaraní), as many small textile vendors and workshops do not accept cards.
- Learning a few basic greetings in Guaraní will go a long way in breaking the ice with the local artisans.
- Ask the craftsmen if you can watch them work; many are happy to demonstrate their traditional weaving techniques.

Carapeguá, a town in the Paraguarí Department of southern Paraguay, lies about 84 kilometres south-east of Asunción along Route 1, the country's main road to the Argentine border. It was founded in 1725 by Franciscan friars and developed into one of the most important centres of Paraguayan handicrafts. Carapeguá is nationally famous for the production of Poyví and Ao Po'í, fine cotton fabrics and embroidered shirts decorated with traditional patterns that are considered symbols of Paraguayan culture. Today around 35 000 people live in the municipality, many of them employed in textile workshops. Economically the town relies on textile production, agriculture, sugar-cane processing and cheese making. The annual Festival del Poyví, a colourful cultural event with fashion shows, music and dance, draws thousands of visitors. Notable sights include the historic eighteenth-century parish church and the Mercado Artesanal with its traditional embroidery and handmade garments reflecting local artisanship.
