Itá
Itá is a spirited town in Paraguay's Central Department, globally recognized as a bastion of traditional handicrafts. While its name means 'stone' in the Guaraní language, the town's fame rests entirely on its clay work. Its most iconic creation is the 'Gallinita de la Suerte', small black clay hens believed to bring good luck, which can be found in homes throughout Paraguay. This artisanal pottery tradition has been passed down through generations, primarily by the town's skilled female potters. At the center of the town lies the San Blas Lagoon, a scenic park famous for its surprising residents: a large population of yacarés (South American caimans) that live peacefully in the waters, often basking on the banks near visitors. The park is a popular spot for photography and leisurely walks. Surrounding the lagoon, numerous workshops and galleries allow travelers to watch artisans at work, crafting everything from decorative vases to complex religious sculptures. Itá is located roughly 37 kilometers from Asunción and is easily accessible via Ruta 1. Every February, the town bursts into celebration for the Feast of San Blas, featuring colorful parades, traditional music, and dance. The best time to visit is during the Southern summer or during the patronal festival to witness the local culture at its peak. A trip to Itá provides a genuine and accessible look into the traditional rural craftsmanship of the country.
