Itauguá was founded on June 27, 1728, by Baron Martin de Barúa and is world-renowned as the City of Ñandutí, a delicate handmade lace that resembles spider webs. This traditional art form, originally brought from Tenerife, was perfected by local craftswomen and is now a symbol of Paraguayan identity. Every year, the city hosts the National Ñandutí Festival, which attracts thousands of visitors and promotes local craftsmanship and folklore. In addition to the textile tradition, Itauguá houses the San Rafael Museum, which features a significant collection of sacred art from the colonial period and historical everyday objects. The city is strategically located on Route PY02 and serves as an important commercial center between the capital Asunción and the east of the country. The architecture in the historical center partly preserves its colonial character, with long corridors and tiled roofs that provide protection from the subtropical heat.
