Ybycuí National Park (Paraguay)

Weather…

The Ybycuí National Park is one of the most visited protected areas in Paraguay, located in the Paraguarí Department, approximately 150 kilometers from Asunción. Established in 1973, the park covers an area of 5,000 hectares and protects a vital portion of the subtropical rainforest. The area is best known for its numerous waterfalls, such as Salto Mbocaruzú and Salto Mina, which cascade into crystal-clear natural pools. Beyond its natural beauty, the park houses the historic 'La Rosada' iron foundry, built in the mid-19th century under Carlos Antonio López, which was the first of its kind in South America. The foundry was destroyed in 1869 by allied forces during the War of the Triple Alliance and now serves as an open-air museum. The park's flora is rich in orchids and ferns, while the fauna includes howler monkeys and a vast variety of colorful butterflies. Trails lead visitors through dense woods to viewpoints overlooking the surrounding hills.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The park is relatively easy to reach from the capital Asunción, mostly via paved roads down to the town of Ybycuí, from where the remaining stretch into the protected area follows fairly manageable local paths.
📅
Best season
Visiting is possible year-round, though the cooler months between April and October tend to offer the most pleasant temperatures for taking extended hikes and exploring the historical foundry ruins comfortably.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is hilly and densely forested, crossed by clear streams and refreshing waterfalls; trails are largely recognizable but require surefootedness to navigate the frequently uneven and natural forest paths.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy hiking footwear is essential for the uneven woodland trails, alongside effective insect repellent for mosquitoes, swimwear to enjoy the waterfalls, and plenty of drinking water for a multi-hour visit.
🅿️
Parking
Ample designated parking areas are generally available right at the main entrance and near the visitor center, providing a secure spot to leave your vehicle while you venture off into the surrounding forest.
⚠️
Safety
The trail network is generally quite safe, though visitors must watch out for dangerously slippery rocks near the waterfalls after heavy rainfall and consistently follow standard precautions regarding insect bites.
⏱️
Time needed
A half to full day is typically sufficient to comfortably tour the historical foundry ruins, hike the woodland trails out to the beautiful waterfalls, and set aside plenty of time to enjoy a refreshing swim.
