Capiatá was officially founded on February 2, 1640, by Martín Ledesma de Valderrama and is one of the oldest and most populous cities in the Central Department. The religious and cultural heart of the city is the Church of Virgen de la Candelaria, a masterpiece of Baroque-Guaraní art, whose altarpiece was carved by indigenous artists in the 18th century. The city is located at the intersection of major national highways, making it a strategic hub for industry and logistics near the capital, Asunción. Capiatá is also home to the famous Ramón Elías Museum, which houses an extensive collection of mythological sculptures, Chaco War weapons, and colonial antiquities. In terms of sports, the city gained national fame through Club Deportivo Capiatá, which competed in the top division and international tournaments. The economy is now dominated by textile factories, metal processing plants, and a thriving commercial sector benefiting from the continuous expansion of urban infrastructure.
