J. Augusto Saldívar, a city in the Central Department, lies about 25 kilometres south-east of Asunción and belongs to the capital's metropolitan area. It was established as an independent municipality in 1945 and named after the Paraguayan politician and diplomat Justo Augusto Saldívar, who played a significant role in the interwar period. With around 60 000 inhabitants the town has developed into a dynamic residential area where many families from Asunción settle because housing prices are lower than in the capital. Economically the city relies on commuting, small-scale industry, brick production, animal husbandry and agriculture in the wider surroundings. Characteristic of the town are its extensive residential neighbourhoods stretching along Route 1 and the central market square where fresh produce from the region is traded daily. The parish church and the annual patronal feast on Saint Augustine's day shape local life.
