Antigoneia (North Macedonia)

Weather…

Antigoneia, locally known as Gradot, is an ancient city near modern-day Negotino, founded in the 3rd century BC by the Macedonian King Antigonus II Gonatas. The city was strategically positioned on a high plateau above the Vardar valley to control the vital route through the Iron Gate (Demir Kapija). Archaeological investigations have uncovered remains of monumental defensive walls, residential houses, and public buildings from the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Antigoneia served as a significant military base and trade center before losing its importance in late antiquity and eventually being abandoned. The finds of coins, pottery, and inscriptions on-site provide valuable information about the Hellenistic urban structure and the region's integration into the Macedonian kingdom. Today, the site is an important witness to ancient urban planning on the middle course of the Vardar River.
