💡 Tips
- Rozden is quite remote and currently focused on geological exploration; expect rough roads suitable mostly for 4x4 vehicles.
- There are virtually no tourist facilities here, so bring all the food, water, and supplies you will need for your visit.
- Be highly cautious of unmarked exploration sites or mining test pits; stay on clearly visible paths.
- Mobile phone reception can be very patchy in this mountainous region, so download offline maps before arriving.
🍽 Food
Since this is a remote exploration area, your best bet for a meal is a packed lunch brought from a larger town.
In late summer, you might find wild blackberries in the hills, but ensure you know what you are picking.
If you find a local spring, the water is usually extremely fresh, but check with any locals if it's safe to drink.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
There are no significant shops here. Purchase any needed mining or hiking gear in Kavadarci before heading out.
Very rarely, a local resident might sell a jar of mountain honey, but don't count on it as a shopping destination.
The sheer isolation of Rozden means finding quiet nature is easy; just step away from any active drilling or exploration camps.
Hike towards the lower slopes of Mount Kozuf for absolute silence and pristine mountain landscapes.

The Rozden mining exploration area is located in the Kožuf Mountains in the far south of North Macedonia, near the border with Greece. The region gained fame primarily through the Alshar (Allchar) mine, which is globally regarded as one of the richest deposits of rare arsenic and antimony minerals. Of particular significance is the occurrence of lorandite, a thallium mineral that plays a central role in astrophysical research for detecting solar neutrinos (the LOREX project). Geologically, the area was shaped by volcanic activity during the Pliocene epoch, leading to the formation of complex polymetallic ore deposits. Although large-scale commercial mining is currently dormant, the region is a hotspot for scientific expeditions and geological prospecting. The ecological sensitivity of the Kožuf Mountains requires strict monitoring of any exploration activities. Besides thallium, there are also significant deposits of realgar and orpiment, which were historically used for pigment production.
