Veles Old Town (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The old town of Veles on the banks of the Vardar River is an impressive example of 18th and 19th-century urban architecture in North Macedonia. Due to the extremely steep topography, the houses were built in terraces above one another, giving Veles the appearance of an amphitheater. The architecture is characterized by traditional Balkan construction: white facades, overhanging upper floors (Çardak), and dark wood elements. Particularly striking are the houses of wealthy merchants, which often featured richly decorated ceilings and built-in wall cabinets. Many of these buildings are located in the Varoš quarter and are closely linked to the city's cultural identity. In the 19th century, Veles was a significant trade and education center, which is reflected in the quality of the building substance. One of the best-known monuments is the house of Kosta Racin, one of the most significant Macedonian poets. The narrow, cobbled alleys and integrated churches create a unique atmosphere that has largely been preserved despite modern influences.
