Stobi was one of the most significant ancient cities in Macedonia, located at the confluence of the Crna and Vardar rivers. Originally a Paeonian settlement, it flourished under Roman rule, eventually becoming the capital of the province of Macedonia Salutaris (later Macedonia Secunda). The city was a thriving commercial hub, as evidenced by monumental remains such as the large theater, luxurious palaces adorned with magnificent mosaics, and early Christian basilicas. A standout feature is the Baptistery, famous for its mosaics depicting peacocks and various Christian symbols. Stobi served as a major religious center and an episcopal seat until the 6th century, when devastating earthquakes and raids by Avars and Slavs led to its decline. Today, the archaeological site features visitors a fascinating look into Roman and Late Antique urban planning, architecture, and art.
