Tikves Wetland (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Tikveš Wetland is a strict nature reserve located in the southern part of North Macedonia, extending around the artificial Tikveš Lake and along the lower reaches of the Crna Reka and Vardar rivers. Established in 1997, the protected area covers approximately 10,650 hectares and is primarily known as one of the most significant bird sanctuaries in Southeast Europe. The steep cliffs and canyons of the Crna Reka provide good nesting sites for rare birds of prey, including the Griffon vulture, the Egyptian vulture, and the Imperial eagle. The area is characterized by a sub-Mediterranean climate, which supports the growth of specific flora. Geologically, schist and limestone formations dominate, creating a dramatic backdrop for the aquatic landscape. Beyond its ornithological importance, the area is also noted for its herpetological diversity, hosting numerous rare reptile and amphibian species.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best observation season is spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) during bird migration when many waterbirds stop over. In summer (June-August) local breeding birds are active but heat can be intense.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning from 5 to 8am waterbirds are most active feeding on the reservoir. Late afternoon from 4pm flocks gather before heading to roosting sites.
📜
Etiquette
Stay at designated observation points and do not enter the shoreline zone to avoid disturbing nests. Avoid loud noises and fast movements that could startle the birds.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars with 8-10x magnification are essential for birdwatching on the vast reservoir. A sun hat and plenty of water are important as there are often no shaded spots.
🧭
Getting there
Tikves Wetland is located at Lake Tikves in North Macedonia, about 30 kilometers southwest of Kavadarci. It is reachable by car on the local road network; a 4x4 vehicle is recommended for the last kilometers.
🦌
What to expect
Waterbirds frequently change their position on the lake - patiently scan different sectors. An early start in the morning increases the chance of seeing the largest flocks.
