Smolare Waterfall (North Macedonia)

Weather…

Smolare Waterfall is the highest permanent waterfall in North Macedonia, featuring a vertical drop of 39.5 meters. Located deep within the Belasica Mountain range at an elevation of 630 meters, it is positioned above the village of Smolare. The Lomnica River cascades down a nearly vertical rock face into a deep natural pool carved out by centuries of water erosion. Geologically, the surrounding cliffs consist of metamorphic rocks that endure the constant force of the falling water. The site is accessible via a well-maintained trail including over 300 stone steps that lead through a dense forest of ancient beech trees. A wooden observation deck has been constructed at the base, allowing visitors to experience the mist and power of the falls up close. The environment is characterized by high humidity, which supports a lush variety of flora and unique moss species. Smolare Waterfall is a protected natural monument and serves as the primary tourist landmark of the Novo Selo municipality in the far east of the country.
