Belasica Peak (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Belasica mountain range is a prominent border range in southeastern North Macedonia, bordering both Bulgaria and Greece. The highest peak on Macedonian territory is Kalabak, standing at approximately 2,029 meters, while Radomir is the overall highest point of the massif. The range is famous for its steep northern slopes and impressive waterfalls, such as Smolare and Koleshino, which are among the tallest in the country. Historically, Belasica is known for the Battle of Kleidion in 1014, where the forces of Tsar Samuel were defeated by Byzantine Emperor Basil II. The flora is exceptionally diverse, featuring chestnut forests at lower elevations and beech and fir forests higher up. Today, Belasica serves as a symbol of regional cooperation, hosting annual international mountaineering meetings for enthusiasts from all three neighboring countries. The climate is influenced by Mediterranean patterns, leading to milder temperatures compared to the western Macedonian mountains.
