Carevi Kuli (Tsar's Towers) (North Macedonia)

Weather…

Carevi Kuli, also known as the Tsar's Towers, is an impressive fortress situated on a hill directly above the city of Strumica in southeastern North Macedonia. The site has a long history reaching back to the Early Bronze Age, although the currently visible walls primarily date from the Late Antiquity and Medieval periods. Due to its strategic position at an elevation of 450 meters, the fortress provided excellent control over the Strumica plain and major north-south trade routes. During the reign of the Bulgarian Tsar Samuel in the 11th century, the fortress served as a pivotal defensive point against the Byzantines. Archaeological excavations have unearthed remains of residential buildings, water cisterns, and a Byzantine church. The massive defensive towers and walls testify to the military significance of the site over many centuries. In recent years, parts of the complex have been restored, making it a popular destination for hikers and tourists who enjoy the spectacular panoramic views of the entire region. Carevi Kuli is considered one of the most important symbols of Strumica's rich historical past.
