Church of Saint Elijah (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Church of Saint Elijah (Sveti Ilija) in Star Dojran is a significant religious and historical structure dating from the mid-19th century. Built in 1848 on a hill overlooking Lake Dojran, it once served as the city's cathedral. The monumental building was constructed by the renowned Renzovci family of master builders in the style of a three-nave basilica and was famous for its grand interior. During World War I, as Star Dojran was situated directly on the Salonika Front, the church was severely bombarded by artillery and almost completely destroyed. For decades, only its massive exterior walls remained as ruins, serving as a poignant reminder of the war's devastation. In recent years, extensive restoration and reconstruction projects have been initiated to return the building to its original state and make it accessible again for worship and tourism. The church is not only a symbol of faith but also an icon of the cultural rebirth of the Dojran region following the destruction of the early 20th century.
