Belasica Mountains (North Macedonia)

Weather…

Belasica is a mountain range in the far southeast of North Macedonia, serving as a natural tripoint between North Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Greece. Its highest peak on Macedonian territory is Radomir, reaching 2,029 meters. The range is famous for its steep northern slopes, which are punctuated by numerous spectacular waterfalls, such as the Smolare and Koleshino waterfalls. Geologically, the massif consists of very ancient metamorphic rocks, indicating its connection to the Rhodope system. The flora is characterized by dense chestnut forests in the lower reaches and extensive beech forests higher up. Historically, the mountain is famous for the Battle of Kleidion in 1014, where the Byzantine Emperor Basil II defeated the Macedonian army under Tsar Samuel. Today, Belasica is a symbol of cross-border cooperation and peace, epitomized by the 'Peak of Friendship.' The region features excellent opportunities for ecotourism and mountain hiking in a landscape rich in historical significance.
