Belasica Mountain (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Belasica mountain range is located in the extreme southeast of North Macedonia, forming a natural border with Greece and Bulgaria. The massif is famous for its dense sweet chestnut forests and impressive waterfalls, such as the Smolare Waterfall, which stands at nearly 40 meters as the country's highest. The highest elevation on the Macedonian side is Mount Kalabak, reaching 2029 meters. Geologically, Belasica is one of the oldest ranges in the Balkan Peninsula, characterized by a steep northern flank that drops sharply into the Strumica Valley. The region holds significant historical weight, most notably for the Battle of Kleidion in 1014 between the Byzantine Empire and the First Bulgarian Empire. Today, the mountain is a center for cross-border cooperation and hiking tourism. Its flora includes over 1200 plant species, many of which are unique to the southern Balkan region.
