Al Wahbah Crater (Saudi Arabia)

Weather…

Al Wahbah Crater is an impressive natural phenomenon located in the desert west of Riyadh, on the edge of the Harrat Kishb volcanic field. With a diameter of approximately two kilometers and a depth of 250 meters, it is one of Saudi Arabia's most dramatic geological formations. For a long time, it was widely believed to be a meteorite impact site, but geologists have since identified it as a maar crater, formed by a phreatic eruption caused by magma coming into contact with groundwater. The floor of the crater is covered with a brilliant white crust of sodium phosphate crystals, which creates a shallow salt lake after rare rainfall. Visitors can descend into the crater via a steep and rugged path, an endeavor that requires significant physical fitness due to the intense heat and challenging terrain. The surrounding landscape is dotted with solidified lava flows and ancient volcanic cones. The site provides a unique window into the region's volcanic activity from roughly 1.1 million years ago.
