Dojran Lake (North Macedonia)

Weather…

Dojran Lake is a tectonic lake located in southeastern North Macedonia on the border with Greece. Covering a total area of approximately 43 square kilometers, with about 27 square kilometers within Macedonian territory, it is the smallest of the country's three major lakes. The lake is nearly circular in shape and is notable for its shallow waters, with an average depth of only about 10 meters. This shallowness causes the water to warm up quickly in the summer, making it a favorite spot for bathing and tourism. The lake is famous for its unique traditional fishing method involving cormorants and reed enclosures known as 'mandras', a technique practiced for centuries that is part of the regional cultural heritage. Additionally, the lake's mud and iodine-rich waters are known for their healing properties, particularly for respiratory and rheumatic conditions. During the 1990s, the lake suffered a dramatic drop in water levels, but conservation efforts and artificial water supplementation have led to a significant recovery. The lake's ecosystem is highly diverse, hosting various endemic fish species and rare migratory birds.
