Tchibarakaten Gold Mining

Tchibarakaten is a prominent gold mining district located in the far north of Niger, near the Algerian border in the Agadez region. The area rose to international prominence around 2014 when a massive gold rush drew thousands of miners from across West Africa to this remote Saharan location. Unlike the industrial mines in the west, gold extraction here is predominantly artisanal and semi-industrial. The Nigerien government has made significant efforts to regulate the sector, tasking the state-owned company SOPAMIN with overseeing activities and purchasing the gold produced. Tchibarakaten has transformed into a vital economic hub, flourishing despite extreme desert temperatures and the security challenges inherent in a border region. The gold found here is noted for its high purity and is often primary-processed on-site before being transported to Agadez for further trade or export. The economic dynamism of the district has led to the emergence of permanent settlements in the desert, complete with their own informal infrastructure. For the Agadez region, the gold mines of Tchibarakaten represent one of the most significant sources of income today.
