Grand Mosque of Agadez (Niger)

Weather…

The Grand Mosque of Agadez is an exceptional example of Sudano-Sahelian mud-brick architecture, serving as a landmark in the desert city for centuries. The structure was originally commissioned in 1515 during the peak of the Aïr Sultanate's influence over trans-Saharan trade routes. Its distinctive minaret stands approximately 27 meters tall, holding the title of the world's tallest mud-brick structure. The tower underwent a major reconstruction in 1844, maintaining the traditional wooden scaffolding elements, known as toron, which protrude from the walls to facilitate regular re-plastering. Beyond its religious function, the mosque represents the cultural intersection of Tuareg and Hausa traditions in the Sahara. In 2013, the historic center of Agadez, including this mosque, was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its architectural and historical value. The building is constructed primarily from banco, a mixture of clay, straw, and organic materials that provides essential thermal regulation against the Saharan climate.
