SOMAIR Uranium Mine (Niger)

Weather…

The SOMAIR (Société des Mines de l'Aïr) uranium mine is a major open-pit mining operation located near the town of Arlit in northern Niger. Established in 1968 and commencing production in 1971, it was the first industrial uranium mine in the country. The mine is operated by a consortium led by the French company Orano (formerly Areva) in partnership with the Nigerien government. It targets the uranium-bearing sandstone deposits of the Tim Mersoï Basin on the western edge of the Aïr Mountains. For decades, SOMAIR has been a cornerstone of Niger's economy, contributing significantly to its exports and global uranium supply. The site includes extensive processing facilities to produce yellowcake, which is then transported to ports in Benin for international shipment. The mine has economically transformed the Agadez Region while presenting long-term environmental and health challenges for the local community.
