The COMINAK uranium mine, located near Akokan in northern Niger, was one of the world's most significant underground uranium operations for over four decades. Established in 1974, the Compagnie Minière d'Akouta began commercial production in 1978 as a joint venture between the French group Orano, the Nigerien government, and partners from Spain and Japan. Throughout its operational life, the mine produced more than 75,000 tons of uranium concentrate, cementing Niger's role as a key supplier in the global energy market. Production officially ceased in March 2021 due to the depletion of economically viable ore reserves. Since then, the site has been undergoing an extensive environmental remediation and radiological monitoring program to ensure long-term safety for the local population and ecosystem. The closure marked the end of an industrial era for the Arlit region, which had been economically and socially defined by the mine's activities for generations.

What is this place?
The COMINAK uranium mine in Akouta near Arlit, Niger, was for decades one of the world's largest underground uranium mines before closing in 2021. It played a crucial role in global uranium production and energy supply.
Visiting
The mine is no longer accessible after closure, and the site is being rehabilitated. From the road between Arlit and Akouta you can see the shaft installations and waste dumps in the distance.
Where to view it
The best viewpoint is the hill east of Akouta, offering an overview of the entire mine complex and surrounding desert landscape. The dunes on the edge of Arlit also provide a wide view over the former mining area.

In the Arlit region, local markets offer Tuareg handicrafts such as silver jewellery and leather goods. Dates and millet from the oases are also typical local products.
