Drieberg Summit (Netherlands)

Weather…

The summit of the Drieberg marks the highest point of a prominent elevation in the Utrechtse Heuvelrug near Leersum. Reaching a height of approximately 52 meters, this point provides an excellent vantage point for observing the geological structures formed during the Saale glaciation about 150,000 years ago. The crest consists primarily of coarse sand and gravel, thrust up into a moraine ridge by the pressure of advancing ice sheets. Historically, the region was characterized by expansive heathlands until the 19th century, when it was reforested with mixed pine and oak for timber production. The summit area is now a protected ecosystem, serving as a sanctuary for forest dwellers like the black woodpecker and various bat species. Hiking trails that are part of a regional network lead directly over the summit, allowing visitors to experience the ice-age landscape firsthand. Management efforts focus on preserving natural soil profiles and promoting near-natural forest development for increased biodiversity.
