Zeist is an elegant city in the province of Utrecht, located within the forested slopes of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park. First documented in 838, the town rose to prominence in the 17th century with the construction of Slot Zeist. The castle, built between 1677 and 1686 for Willem Adriaan van Nassau, is a splendid example of Dutch Baroque architecture and currently functions as a cultural hub. A unique aspect of Zeist is the 18th-century settlement of the Moravian Church (Herrnhuters), whose characteristic symmetrical squares and buildings near the castle still define the urban landscape. Due to its scenic surroundings, Zeist became a favored summer retreat for wealthy citizens from Utrecht and Amsterdam during the 19th century, resulting in the construction of numerous grand villas and estates. Today, the city is a prestigious residential area and hosts the headquarters of major organizations, including the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) and WWF Netherlands.
