Almere is the youngest city in the Netherlands, located in the province of Flevoland on land reclaimed from the IJsselmeer through poldering. The first houses were completed only in 1976, and since then, the settlement has expanded rapidly to become the eighth-largest municipality in the country. The entire city is situated approximately two to five meters below sea level, protected by a sophisticated network of dikes and pumping stations. Architecturally, Almere serves as a testing ground for modern urban planning, with distinct districts designed as self-contained cores surrounded by extensive green spaces and waterways. The city acts as a major residential and economic hub for the Amsterdam metropolitan area and hosted the Floriade international horticultural expo in 2022. Today, Almere is a significant center for logistics, services, and innovative housing projects that emphasize ecological sustainability and modern living standards.
