IJsselstein is a welcoming fortified city in the province of Utrecht, located along the Hollandse IJssel river. Its history dates back to the 13th century with the construction of IJsselstein Castle by Gijsbrecht van Amstel. Although most of the castle was demolished in the 19th century, the prominent castle tower survives as a major city landmark. IJsselstein was granted city rights in 1310 and flourished as a significant trading hub within the Barony of IJsselstein. A globally recognized engineering landmark is the Gerbrandy Tower, a 366-meter-high radio mast that is famously illuminated as the „world's largest Christmas tree” during the festive season. The historic city center is encircled by well-preserved ramparts and moats, featuring the Basilica of St. Nicholas and the Old St. Nicholas Church, which houses the grand tombs of the Lords of IJsselstein. Today, the city is a lively urban center with high living standards, successfully maintaining its medieval ambiance while serving as a modern part of the Utrecht metropolitan area.
