Geologically, it is a glacial tongue basin formed by the immense pressure of advancing ice sheets during the Saale glaciation. Following drainage efforts in the Middle Ages, the area was primarily used for agriculture, but recent years have seen large-scale renaturation efforts. The 'Binnenveldse Hooilanden' project aims to restore valuable peat bog and wet meadow habitats to enhance regional biodiversity. Today, it serves as a significant breeding ground for meadow birds such as the curlew and black-tailed godwit. Canals like the Grift crisscross the landscape, testifying to a long history of water management. The open landscape provides a wide horizon and serves as a vital ecological link between the nature reserves of central Netherlands.
