Upper Kanli Kula (Montenegro)

Weather…

Kanli Kula, which means 'Bloody Tower' in Ottoman Turkish, is one of the most prominent fortresses in Herceg Novi. It was built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, likely on the foundations of an older medieval structure, and stands 85 meters above sea level. The fortress originally served as a prison, earning its somber name, as evidenced by numerous inscriptions and drawings left by prisoners on the walls. During the Venetian rule in the 17th century, the complex was reinforced and integrated into the urban defense system. In 1966, the interior of the fortress was extensively renovated and converted into one of the most spectacular open-air stages on the Adriatic coast. Today, it regularly hosts concerts, theatrical performances, and the famous Herceg Novi Film Festival. Visitors can explore the massive walls and underground dungeons while enjoying a panoramic view of the Old Town and the entrance to the Boka Bay.
