The fortifications associated with French Marshal Auguste de Marmont date back to the period of French administration of the Illyrian Provinces between 1807 and 1813. Under Marmont's leadership, strategic defense points in the Bay of Kotor and Herceg Novi were modernized and expanded to secure control over the Adriatic. Particularly in Herceg Novi, French engineers improved existing Ottoman and Venetian structures and erected new batteries and fortifications on elevated positions. These structures are characterized by military architecture typical of the Napoleonic era, focusing on efficiency and cannon firepower. Although French rule was brief, it left a lasting legacy in the region's urban planning and defense systems. Today, parts of these fortifications remain as ruins, serving as witnesses to the turbulent Napoleonic era on the Montenegrin coast.
