Solila Bird Watching Area (Montenegro)

Weather…

The Solila nature reserve in the Bay of Tivat is a former salt production site that has evolved into one of the most critical wetlands for migratory birds along the eastern Adriatic. Spanning roughly 150 hectares, the area hosts a unique flora dominated by halophytes (salt-tolerant plants) such as glasswort (Salicornia). These specialized plants have adapted to high soil salinity, providing the structural basis for a complex ecosystem of mudflats and shallow waters. Historically, salt was harvested here from the 14th century until the 1960s, a practice that permanently shaped the local soil chemistry. Since gaining protected status in 2008, populations of rare orchids and endemic coastal plants have seen a steady recovery. The vegetation provides essential foraging for over 110 recorded bird species, including flamingos and cranes, while also shielding the coastline from erosion. Solila stands as a prime example of rewilding industrial land into a vital biological sanctuary.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time for birdwatching in the Solila wetland is spring (April-May) and autumn (August-October) during bird migration. During these months, many waders and waterbirds stop over on the salt marshes.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning is when birds are most active foraging, especially during low tide. Late afternoon also features good opportunities as birds return to their roosting sites.
📜
Etiquette
Stay on marked paths to avoid damaging the sensitive salt marsh vegetation. Avoid sudden movements and loud noises so as not to scare the birds.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars with good magnification are essential for identifying often distant birds. Waterproof shoes or rubber boots are advisable as the ground can be wet and muddy.
🧭
Getting there
The Solila wetland is located in Tivat Bay and is accessible via a small road or coastal path. Parking is available near the entrance, from where the observation points are reached on foot.
🦌
What to expect
Birds in the salt marsh can be shy - stay calm and wait for them to come closer again. It may take a while for the birds to settle down after your arrival.
