Žanjice Fortress (Montenegro)

Weather…

The Žanjice Fortress, widely known as Arza, is an impressive Austro-Hungarian fortification located at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor on the Luštica Peninsula. It was constructed in the mid-19th century as a key component of the 'Festung Kotor' defense system, designed to shield the strategic bay from naval invasions. Alongside the Mamula fortress on the neighboring island and the Prevlaka fortress on the Croatian side, Arza formed an impenetrable defensive triangle. The structure is characterized by its massive stonework and precise masonry, typical of Austrian military architecture from that era. Although the fortress lost its tactical significance after World War I, it remains a striking landmark on the Montenegrin coastline. Its location overlooking the popular Žanjice beach makes it a favorite destination for hikers and history buffs who appreciate both the architecture and the commanding views of the open Adriatic Sea.
